5 Historical Places to Live – Ever Consider an Old Palm Beach County Property?
West Palm Beach has seen a vast increase population growth in recent years, and it’s easy to see why! Palm Beach County grew “nearly 22,000 people from July 2015 to July 2016” and boasts a total rate of growth of “1.5 perfect which is faster than 41 other states” (source 1). New luxurious homes are being built daily and are waiting to be bought by new families looking for their piece of paradise. As a realtor, I love to take families around town because everything here offers something unique to see or experience. One of my past clients had a desire to seek Palm Beach County property that was historically aged with character and environment. There were several neighborhoods for us to explore and it was quite enjoyable seeing the different homes characteristics; one as unique as the other. From the Historic Northwood district to the new Southend neighborhoods, I was able to guarantee that she would find something to call her own!
SOUTHEND IS THE PERFECT BEACH NEIGHBORHOOD
The Southend is one of the hottest selling neighborhoods right next to West Palm Beach’s waterfront. The area was first built in early, and late 50’s (source 2) and has seen a recent revitalization of the neighborhood moving from traditional “ranch” style homes to more modern architecture. This 1.5 mile stretch of land has over 2,000 households nestled between various trendy restaurants and businesses along the Dixie Highway (source 3). Many locals love this area because of its variety! You can walk along and see everything from classic structures reminisce of Old Florida with a mixture of Spanish architecture.
The area has become more popular over recent years due to the extensive renovations to local homes and various businesses opening up right around the corner. Southend is centrally located near Flagler drive, and many residents walk or ride their bikes along the Intercoastal waterway. SoSo is about an 8-minute drive into Downtown West Palm Beach where you can visit the famous CityPlace Shopping Center (source 4) as well as only a 5-minute drive to Palm Beach Island to grab some of the best deviled eggs and kale salad at Ta-boos! We would be happy to show you the wonders of SoSo so you can see this quaint little neighborhood for yourself.
OLD NORTHWOOD WITH A NEW CHARM
This neighborhood is 10 square blocks between 26th & 35th street along with Broadway and Poinsettia and is packed full with over 320 beautiful historic buildings (source 5). Upon arrival, you will immediately notice the various architectural styles ranging from Mission style and Mediterranean Revival homes to Frame Vernacular and Mid-Century layouts (source 6). The districts distinguished style was made famous by Addison Mizner during the mid-1920’s throughout South Florida and its where “famed architects and builders of the 1920’s such as John Volk, William King and Henry Harvey” (source 7) built their homes. A new wave of revitalizations has occurred in recent decades keeping the districts unique architecture intact for generations to come. Northwood has homes for sale and rent and is ready for new buyers to enjoy its historic charm!
One event not to be missed is Old Northwood holiday candlelight home tour. This tour is always sold out, so buy your tickets early! Local restaurants set up tastings at several of the decked-out homes. The Christmas decorations are sight in themselves; quite obviously a result of artistic hands and they are showcased alongside holiday bites and spirits.
Maybe Old World Charm is more a mere fantasy; as the modern self desires just that? Why not have the best of both worlds? There is that special something within the historic Palm Beach County property search. Here is your solution.
NEWEST LUXURY APARTMENTS NEAR DOWNTOWN WEST PALM BEACH

The talk of Downtown West Palm Beach right next to historical Northwood Village stands a brand new, luxury apartment building, 312 Northwood. This apartment build offers 1 or 2-bedroom luxury rentals and is “Northwood’s redefinition of modern urban Intercoastal living in chic and funky Northwood” (source 8). Each one of the 99 modern residences contain 10-ft ceilings, plank flooring, oversized windows, stainless steel appliances, shaker cabinets and subway tile backsplashes in the kitchen, quartz countertops, walk-in closets and large terraces. If that wasn’t enough, each resident has a front-loading washer and dryer, gas-powered ranges, large soaking tubs in the bathroom and fully tiled shower stalls in the two-bedroom units.
The building is located oh so close to the Intercoastal waterway and the heart of West Palm’s arts and dining district. EL CID, ANOTHER AREA WORTH INVESTIGATION
El Cid Is probably the closest historical town to downtown West Palm Beach. Its located west of the intracoastal and boasts some very prestigious homes. Each home offers significant architectural details and the properties are well maintained and pleasurable to drive by. The area dates back to 1920 is listed on the local, State and National Register of Historic Places. It is always exciting to show and list homes in this desirable neighborhood.
